Ujjayi Breath

Ujjayi breath known as the Ocean Breath, is one of the fundamental breaths in Pranayama and Meditation. It is called the Ocean Breath because as we breathe with the Ujjayi breath, we make a sound similar to the ocean.

It has the same sound as when we exhale a big “Ahhhhhh”, or when we are trying to fog a mirror in front of us.

The Ujjayi pranayama has many benefits, such as bringing focus and clarity, calming the nervous system, and increasing one’s vitality, to name a few.

Here is how to do it:

1) Sit in a comfortable position, spine straight (this allows prana to come in freely)

2) With your hand in front of you, pretend you have a mirror in your hand, and as you Exhale you are trying to fog up the mirror.

  • Pay attention to the sound you are making.

3) Now do same sound, with you month open as you inhale and exhale.

  • you are constricting the back of the throat.

4) Finally close your mouth, and Inhale and Exhale through the Nose, making the same sound (the sound of the ocean, or as if you are whispering “hello”).

Ujjayi Pranayama is a slow and deep breath meant to bring calmness, clarity, and release from bondages.
